About My Hair Transplant

My first hair implant surgery was to repair and conceal previous hair transplants done in the UK. Dr Hasson did a great job repairing the pluggy hair implants and restoring my frontal hairline. I’m saying this as a patient (I’ve only recently become a patient advisor) who had several mediocre and disappointing surgeries in the UK prior to choosing Hasson & Wong. If only I had found them sooner. You don’t want to be saying this in 5 years time. What’s sad is that many patients let geography be the deciding factor when looking for a hair transplant clinic. With this kind of surgery, one has to think globally. You want the best hair transplant doctor, not the nearest. In the long run, I would have saved myself much time and expense by choosing to go to Hasson & Wong in Canada in the first place. They are widely considered top-tier, the best of the best, and staff are very friendly and helpful. The clinic also helps you get booked into a hotel, pays for two nights stay and reimburses part of your travel expenses. As I said, I am a patient advisor, but I was a patient for many years before beginning that role. View the best hair transplant results videos on the Web today. No clinic in London or the world can equal the demonstrated ability of these two leaders. In the end, hair transplant surgery is about results, not claims, and those claiming to the be the best hair transplant surgeons should support claims with evidence — Hasson and Wong do just that.

When thinking of having a hair transplant, a hair loss sufferer would be wise to do some research first, not allowing the idea of location or convenience to cloud their judgement. Following, is a list of questions that would serve any would-be hair transplant patient well when trying to find the best hair transplant clinic:

1. Is the clinic a member of professional organizations such as the IAHRS, ISHRS, or CIHRP? Membership in these hair restoration assocations indicates that a hair transplant doctor has met a baseline of criteria that any professional hair transplant clinic should follow. There are good clinics, and fair clinics included in these associations, but at least they have been evaluated and are providing safe procedures in a sound clinical environment. Don’t stop there in your research, however, as there are clinics with professional designation that provide less than than stellar results.
2. Does the clinic have a track record of providing consistent results over time? When evaluating clinics, narrow the field to the best by doing some simple homework. Find out how long they’ve been doing hair transplant surgery. Are they doing only hair transplant surgery or do they also do other cosmetic surgical procedure? (are they specialists are wearing too many hats?).
3. Is the clinic using widely accepted hair restoration techniques? Do they perform Follicular Unit Transplantation, which is the standard of care in the industry, or are they using bleeding edge, unproven techniques, with a spotty record of results?
4. Does the hair transplant clinic provide proof of their claims? Any hair transplant doctor can claim they are  ”the best hair transplant clinic” but do they support this claim with documented evidence…results? Any clinic making a claim to be amongst the best should have a visual documentation of their work easily available in the form of tens of hair transplant photos and hair transplant videos. Hair transplant photos should show all angles and include close-ups. The photos should be unadorned and unenhanced, shot under natural lighting conditions without camera flash which makes results look thicker than in reality. Photos should not be shot in studios with lighting, or with fancy backgrounds, or in  fancy or exotic locations. All of these are attempts to distract are mere marketing that detract from the hair transplant. Photos are about results, so results should be the focus. Hair transplant videos should should be shot in high resolution, from mid-distance  and close-up. Mid-distance shots at 3 or 4 feet are far enough away to see the overall appearance of the result, and close-ups from 2 feet and as close as a few inches should be included to show the quality of work in detail, including the donor area. The video should show any relevant angle. If the hair transplant was of the hairline and crown, the hairline and crown should be shown. The videos should also include sections superimposed over before photos so you can see the difference in a patient’s appearance after the transplant has grown.
5. Does the hair transplant clinic post photo, video results to hair loss forums? It’s one thing to show hair transplant photos or videos on a company website where viewers may be uneducated, but does the clinic post results to hair transplant forums where the results will be seen by seasoned patients, and peers? Would-be patients don’t always know what to look for in a hair transplant result, but many forum members have much more knowledge and discerning eyes. If a clinic does not regularly post their results to forums, why?

Following is a broad overview of hair transplant, their application, and their cost (as of this posting):

• Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT by strip)

  In follicular unit transplantation, a strip of tissue containing hair is removed from the back of the head and grafts (groups of hair) are removed in their naturally occurring bundles (1-4 hair groups). FUT is widely considered the safest, most efficient method with both the highest yield and lowest rate of transection (cutting or damage). Top clinics around the world use FUT because it is reliable, more grafts can be taken in a single surgical session, and it is less costly than other methods.

  Cost: £ 3,000- £ 13,000

• Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

  In follicular unit extraction, hair is extracted from the donor area by means of a punch tool. Grafts are extracted one at a time. A small punch first scores the skin and a second larger punch removes the graft.

  Follicular unit extraction is regarded as “blind harvesting” because the hair transplant doctor cannot see the graft as he is removing it. Because of this, transection rates (accidental cutting of grafts) and graft damage are higher than in follicular unit transplantation. In follicular unit transplantation, transection rates are low because doctors score only the edge of the donor area is scored and then grafts are dissected out of the tissue using stereoscopic dissecting microscopes. In FUE, danger of transection exists with each and every graft removed.

  FUE is slow and laborious, and in the end, the patient pays for that time.

  Cost: £ 3,000 – £ 30,000

• Body Hair Transplantation (BHT)

  Currently, BHT is a highly experimental and controversial procedure, unproven as a method, with marginal results at best. Only when a patient cannot have a hair transplant by other accepted, proven methods, should they resort to BHT. Body hair is much different than scalp hair, it is finer, kinky or curly, and has a different growth cycle than scalp hair.

  Body hair is easily damaged when removed from body tissue. The amount of hair required to obtain a barely acceptable result is often ove 30,000 grafts. Doctors who perform BHT use a punch tool similar to that employed in FUE. Like FUE, BHT is a blind harvesting hair transplant technique, the punch tool obscures the graft from view, increasing the likelihood of damage or transection. BHT, in the opinion of many, just doesn’t work to provide an acceptable result. Few BHT clinics post more than a handful of results on their websites, and even those results are marginal at best. Because of the large number of grafts that have to be removed, BHT is the most time consuming and also most costly of hair transplant techniques.

  Cost: £ 6,500 – £ 65,000
